MARIKINA

It's only once in a blue moon to be in the chaotic concrete jungle of Metro Manila as i have been accustomed to the laid back and unperturbed rusticity of the provincial life.

What strikingly impressed me on my very short stay was the unplanned visit to the Public Market of Marikina. It defied the conventional notion of a crowded, disorganized, cramped and more often than not unsanitary place. All the streets of the market zone are covered with roofs for the convenience of the market goers. Snaking along the covered streets, one will notice its cleanliness and orderliness. The market goers caught my attention as they were all carrying reusable bags, my host told me that vendors will charge you
2 pesos for every bag used ... what a better way to reduce our waste! No, its not because they can not afford the 2 pesos, there is Ordinance 18 S2012 " Regulating the use of plastic packaging/bags on wet goods and banning the use of plastic packaging on dry goods." that became a law in May 02, 2012 and is effectively enforced and implemented.

Marikina Market is a safe haven for market goers, uniformed market personnel roam around and constantly advising people to take care of their belongings. At the center of the market is a concierge where one can ask directions, monitor prices and other concerns.

No wonder why one of the motorcycle chases from the movie Bourne Legacy was filmed inside the Marikina Market. Read a line describing Marikina Market as the biggest and cleaneast public market in Metro Manila but tend to disagree ... Its the Biggest and Cleanest Public Market in the Philippines!

Whenever I'll be swept  to the metro again... I go explore more of Marikina Market and its environs.

Salute to the LGU of Marikina City and its people!
